Lots of corridors with interior windows in these places. Must have been for the sun to shine through to the rooms. I thought fancy barn right away as well. Horses love sticking their heads out to see their other horse buddies.
Yup, I can see the holes or lumps or whatever where the rails had attache. Probably metal rails on this spiral. I saw the black bricks just ending on one side as well. They seemed to have a lot of blocked up areas in this place.
There are holes in the front wall too. Peep holes? Naw, looks like there used to be wires or something. Sooooo, the "soothing" green was used in almost all government buildings as well. Did they need to sooth the workers. Perhaps they should start painting the post offices green again.
The missing stair rails must have been just rails floating in mid air. I cannot see any evidence of pilasters to hold the rails. The stairs do seem rather narrow and shallow. Remember; people were smaller in those days. My kitchen counters are only 30 inches off the floor. I have to stoop to wash dishes. I am the dishwasher. Yes, I have an old crumbly house.
Flat boring windows come with standardization of the construction industry. One can still order fancy windows if one has the money. All of the "matching" windows in my house were different sizes. They only varied about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. But still different. The glass was very thin and wavy. I had to replace them due to high heat bills. I miss the old blurry glass.
I have nightmares about climbing stairways with doors at the top that swing open and hit me and knock me back down the stairs. This door looks like the type that would do that to me. Bad door.
Really great wiitrng! More writers should care as much as you do about the content they produce. This has really given me a good reason to think more on this subject. Thank you for this.
