Having taught at Bennett 1966-70 and lived at Oak Summit I have followed this saga with interest. Halcyon is such an incredibly unique structure - a building that housed offices, classrooms, dormitories, lounges, dining hall, meeting places.....I remember all of that inlaid dark wood, the magnificent clock ikn the lobby, the art gallery, faculty lounge, that "beautiful Titanic-style staircase." I still believe that the building still stands as a reflection of human values - long after its wonderful life as a place where young women studied, played, painted, acted, met, etc. it stands amidst small town stoicism, corporate greed, idol curiosity and outright hypocrisy. But it stands! Yes, it stands! Even now it has a life of its own - a photographer's unique model, a place to explore for those who treasure haunted ruins. Halcyon is not a relic really - it's simply an old, old lady who has been abandoned and ignored, an old lady even made the center of idiotic political and civic machinations by folks unworthy of her. Uncaredf for, unprotected and denied human touch this old lady fades, falls apart by inches and feet and, yet, still maintains more dignity and beauty than "all of the king's men" could ever understand or apreciate. In remaining standing she expresses far more than words, feelings or petty decisions. The grand old lady may finally fall, but what she is and what she represents will remain.
As of Sept 21, 2012, the Citizen's Voice (paper) reported in an article of theirs that the county will discuss Sterling demolition funding next week... projected demolition cost -$486,000 to $1m based on who gets the bid. I guess that's why it's really still standing -they say they can't afford to tear it down. Just like they can't afford to fix it up...there's always a way, just not enough wealthy ones to care enough. I remember a few years ago seeing some people on that sidewalk on the corner with signs..."Save Hotel Sterling!"... it seems like the place fizzled out with the coal mining industry in this area. I know it would be a fortune to fix up, but the end result would be phenominal. Personally, I would pay just to walk through the door and see the end result and to relive some of our wonderful, if not sometimes twisted past...
I went there yesterday and not too much supernatural stuff happened but these two things did occur. It sounded as if someoneonr was talking to themself but the words were muffled and unclear and none of my friends knew where it was coming from and we were all freaked out. And at one point there was a loud screeching sound but that was it. I heard a story from my friend though that he walked into a room, a homeless man pulled put a gun, pointed it at him and said "get the fuck out now". So yeah there are homeless bitches in that shit. Mad creepy but i suggest going there its very interesting
I just found out about this place and want to go and see it for myself
what the best way to go in .isnt there a park and ride up the road and is it a good idea to park at night
I like this final shot in this section. It really reminds me of a classic final scene in like a sequel to the legendary classic Day of The Triffids, which probably be called Night of The Triffids. Its reminiscent of the long battle with the Triffids having been over, and the final survivor runs down this hallway late at night seeing that it is the only place where the Triffids didn't leave their vines attached when they finally died, and the final survivor had no choice but to crash through... But did the survivor survive? Plummet to his death? The final scene of the movie is just this shot with the music being apprehensive, wondering...
Ok. Nice shot. Would be just about the perfect place to urinate and not get any urine scent anywhere. Of course to do that one would have to...um...and that may not be the best of ideas if that basement is pitch dark and you would have the sound of splashing water be your guide and if something swam in there...and happened to be hungry for sausages...
Just when you thought one pic was awesome... BLAMMO!!! SUPER KABLOOIE!!! This one shows up. I mean, sure, it may look as if it might not be authentic (and should never be doubted at all), but holy Ding Dongs of Apocalyptic Doom n' Gloom on The 34th High Plane of Ultra Doom, this one reminds me of Horror High for some reason (super classic clunker horror movie!) and the lighting and everything are exquisite and completely spot on! You rock Motts, you rock!!!
Holy Ding Dongs! Wow... This is one of those shots that just...well...plays with your mind. I mean, think about it. Looks just like you are peering into some sort of alternate dimension. Albeit, if I were there and saw that, and Jack Nicholson showed his face through that hole (in a strange hallucination not LSD induced), I'd probably lapse into cardiac arrest... I mean, this is like the Major Ding Dong of Doom super snap in this section... Nice going!
Wow... Super excellent shot!!! Reminds me of a hidden room medical dream I had years ago... It was sort of like this room, complete with cabinets, rusty medical apparatii (maybe not a word, but maybe too late to even slighly care) right down to the color of the peeling paint on the walls. Serious commendation for Mr. Motts! Should be given the title of Honorary Supreme Grand Sovereign High Photog Potentate and be rightfully revered for this excellent photographic work!
