The pipes are insulated with insulating mud. That is why they have the I was wet once look. Insulating mud is/was used with and without Asbestos fibers in it depending on when it was made. The date for official stoppage of use is 1973 but it was allowed products already on the market be used up.
There is no real way to visibly identify Asbestos it can only be seen under an electron microscope. The visual indicators are age, corrugated cardboard wrapped around a pipe, horsehair in the mud. But these methods are not foolproof and need experience to be effective.
Best just to use a mask and not disturb any dust around the suspect item.

I'm assuming they went back and forth since they were cable driven, but I don't recall seeing the winch mechanism so I'm not positive how it worked.

Yeah I thought it was crushed too, but it's possible that the lamp shade is intentionally curved in like that to prevent blinding a worker stationed at the same elevation.

Those are really cool lamps! Both up-light and reading light together in one.
