copper was and is also today used for plumbing and heating... today copper is somewhat getting phased out by the use of Pvc plastic piping but for heating you need copper. when copper "oxidizes"( i think i spelled that right" it does turn green but not all the way through.. under the green is still that copper finish.. technically the statue of liberty could be sanded and polsihed down and shine like a brand new penny. as for working heard to get the copper out it all depends on how u can acess it... if your in a basement where yits easily accessable ita a matter of cutting the tube and probabally getting a little messy... i honesly wouldnt wanna know what resides in a 20 year old copper pipe though.

Yeah, I've noticed that alot of the asylums have pink rooms. That color would drive ME insane. But then again it adds to the creepy feeling you get from these old places that are believed to be haunted.

Wow, kind of creepy if you ask me. My parents had a bed like that for me when I was little. When I was old enough not to fall out of my bed, both sides of it were let down permanently to make a normal looking bed. Only difference was, it didn't seem so...creepy.

Here is some info specific to Letchworth, but all institutional facilities for people with mental retardation and/or developmental disabilities (MR/DD) are downsizing or closing as services are finally being provided for these folks in the community. The term for an institution for people with MR/DD is "institutional care facility for the mentally retarded", or ICF-MR.

Oops - sorry - didn't mean to leave you out. So is there a lot of copper in buildings or do people have to work pretty hard to get it out? I guess I never think of copper being used but when I watched a house being built some years ago I remember being there when they put in some copper tubing for what I guess was the water pipes? But then water and air turn copper green. OK, you building-savvy people - what all is copper used for?
Thanks for answering, MaDMaN. :-)

I'm heading up to the Catskills in two weeks for some good east coast mountain air. My family has been going to the Catskills for years and years. I find it to be an incredibly magical place.

During one of my last visits my sister Gini and I came up with the term "dead pool" for all the abandon resort pools left behind for the regions heyday.

With the renewed interest in the area I'm very affraid the history of the area, all the old resorts, and abandon vacation properties will be torn down and replaced with exceptionally large, and terribly ugly "vacation" and "second" homes.

My family was part of the "Irish side" of the mountains around Palenville. I always heard about being on the Borscht Belt or the Irish Side.

Thanks for breaking the rules. I think it's critically important to capture and preserve this state of decay in our country. These are our relics and cultural artifacts.
