Many of these places arent that creapy in the BOO haunted way. They are creapy in the fact that alot of mental pain went on with in these walls. They are more sad than scary.
Many of the various psyc. hospitals on long island do have a tunneling system under the entire campus. These tunneling systems were used by patients and doctors post surgery and for the patients that could not go out side for various mental issues. I have been in the tunnels under the CI hospital and have met former workers at CI. I have spent countless hours in the abandoned buildings there. Most of the underground tunnels are like a large map with a simple grid system.... No string needed Tom...
I worked with many of "these" types of people. Most of them were extremely loving, and became like part of my family, or were really good friends. A very small percentage were violent and intimidating, but don't you have that in any population? And, Dr. D. Motts couldn't publish just ONE book, there are too many incredible photographic opportunities to choose from. I'm thinking at least four or five books!
These are porches for smoking...a very common activity among the mentally ill who are hospitalized long term. Having porches for this reason theoretically kept patients from smoking in the wards or in bed. Keep in mind that when these hospitals were built, the common thinking was that "these people" (as Giovanna called them) were not supposed to have freedom. Unfortunately, that belief persists today as I can see from many of these posts. To be "freaked out" by people you have never met is very immature indeed. I hate to break it to you but practically everyone who has posted here very likely knows someone with a mental illness, whether or not that person has admitted it to you.
Beautiful work, Motts. Sign me up for a copy of your book when it's published.
It's a water distillation unit.
We used them at our hospital.
Steam from the power house is piped to the SS unit, and the distilled water is stored in the unit on the right for use.
We used it to clean out our chemical treatment test kits vials.
I have to quote Don Marquis' cockroach, archy, from "archy & mehitabel," who said:
"you want to know whether i believe in ghosts
of course i do not believe in them
if you had known as many of them as i have
you would not believe in them either"
Back in 2001 I worked in a hospital power house. On the mid-night shift i'd walk around the building, mainly just out of sheer bordom.
The 5th floor, which was not occupied anymore, was the old pediatric ward and was said to be haunted.
Well! one night I dis-embark from the elevator, turned the corner and I swear I saw something at the end of a long hallway. This did not happen only once but on several occasions.
The figure appeared to move swiftly out of view as if it knew I was there. At first i thought of the normal stuff, someone doing the same thing as me, just roaming the halls. This wasen't so though, a key was needed to gain access via the elevator and only the charge nurse OD and engineer OD had the key.
So I called the ER to see of the OD nurse was down there and sure enough she was.
Other occasions I'd get a glimpse of a figure moving behind the boilers(they were huge) I'd walk to the area and no-one was there.
Apparently, some yrs prior a boiler tender died of a massive heart-attack and was found back behind the boilers.
I'm still spooked to this day.
