The reason things got swanker higher up was because of no air conditioning. Higher equals cooler back then.

I remember visiting this place for a High School Health class field trip. It was just as bad as people say. Granted the paint is bad and neglect of the buildings now, but it was pretty much maintained . The buildings were maintained (Not clean) and the lawn and shrubs were trimmed. I will never forget when we pulled up in the school bus. It was like in the movies. No supervision and clients jumping out of trees and just doing what they wanted. We as a class had to stay close together (Stated by the tour person) The halls and rooms were disgusting. (Smells, urine and the such). I was surprised that most of the clients did not realize we were there to look at them. Some asked me if I had certain things in "My Ward". I really felt bad for them. The only reason I could figure out why the school district would want us to field trip this place was to make us feel good that we were not like them. It was just a crime that these people were treated like this.
