Doorways did seem narrower back when alot of times. My former house, built in 1920, featured very strange doors between some rooms that were but a foot wide and seven feet tall. Odd sizing and placement... they almost seemed afterthoughts in the architecture. I know that isn't common, but construction did seem less regulated then.
