That is a beautiful piece of American Engineering. Believe it or not, many industrial launderers still use these. They are built like tanks and they produce well pressed dry linen at very high speeds when fully functional. In 2003, I took over at a plant in Tallahassee that had a Six Roll Slant Chest built in 1918. Well maintained and fully functional, just a little bit too slow for todays standards though. In the above picture, you do not get to see the sacriest part, double stacked rows of gears and sprockets used to drive the rolls. Originally manufacted, they didn't have all the covers and hood and safety features. Chains and sprockets were left wide open. And no Emergency Stop features either. If you got caught in, you only hoped someone quick was at the diconnect. You can still buy them remanufactured and of course updated with all the safety controls and personnel protection devices as well as more efficient controls and drives. True American Engineering, enduring.
