My friend was quadriplegic so couldn't hold himself up at all, he needed all the straps and bars to keep him sitting upright. As sad as it looks, his chair (which was super funky electric do everything cool) let him get up and around - he could go 'for a walk' outside. The alternative is starring at a ceiling.

A chain wouldn't give you that much control if it was attached to a mechanism, would it?. I was thinking sewing machine too but wouldn't the chain give too much slack if it was operating something? What about as a leg exerciser (this was in the gym)?
