Beneath the Canopy

The old sanatorium was gargantuan, made of concrete, and perhaps a bit on the ugly side, but there was just something so enthralling about such a place under a mature forest. The trees seemed carefully placed eighty years ago in key positions, but now everything was tangled and wild, desperately competing for the sun. Its rays warmed the interior of the structure with vivid green and yellow dapples of light that shimmered as we walked down the seemingly endless halls. With only the sounds of the birds to be heard, it really felt like we were the only ones left on the planet.
