An expanse of reeds blocked our view all around us as we trekked through the coastal marsh lining the New Jersey shoreline. Garbage was everywhere and an unseen carcass somewhere in the weeds was ripening in the midday sun. The rotting stench mixed with a faint chemical smell from the refineries nearby; the NJ industrial waste zone was like no other place. Along our way in, we skirted a busy shipping container yard and the rail yard that once held the trains queued up for the dumper that was still being used.
Soon enough, Big Mac stood before us: a hulking skeleton of steel perched on a rotting pier. I knew the photos would be shitty before I even pulled out the camera. The intense sun and haze washed everything out, and the dumper's rusted structure appeared as a black, formless silhouette. Ah well. The antique machinery which lifted tons of rail car and coal completely upside down was still amazing to see.
