it doesn't necessarily have to have been in pain. As the above comment states, probably more from the agonal gasping rather than anything else. It had to have either been dead or paralysed when it got there because it wouldn't let itself be in that position.

I thought about it for a while and when animals are close to death they go and hide somewhere to die alone. The expression on the cats face and the position of the body was more than likely from it's nerves twitching and its muscles tightening up after death.
