I believe because of the materials used and the lack of arms, etcetera, that this might probably have been a bath chair. I've seen more modern versions in the therapy units where we take my little sister who is mentally retarded and developmentally delayed. Many of these chairs remain mostly in the shower stall or bathroom area and allow the kids to be washed before entering the pool or what have you.
