how can you people even speak like this... were you actually in here? i just cant see what is so beautiful about being locked up in some kind of hell hole, if you will. i dont see any beauty in locking real; people up in conditions like this...please fill me in on how you percieve the world because this is no kind of "beauty" to me!!!!!!!!!!!
I have an ancestor who was a resident at the hospital, when we tried to find the records of why he was there we were informed they were destroyed many years ago. I have always wanted to explore the buildings.
drive past this place on my way to work every day.
i have mixed feelings about it, i love looking at it, and i love explaining it to the many, MANY tourists in the area that are enthralled by it (i work at a hotel closeby and it certainly generates a lot of interest).
however, despite the beauty of it (and shut up, it truly IS beautiful, free your mind, people) it could be so well suited as so many other things that this area needs. certainly not more indian/casino ground, though (the hospital is on a main road that connects two indian reservations/casinos).
but i must say, i AM glad utopia fell through. there are many things this place would be good for, but a movie studio/amusument park is certainly NOT one of them!
I grew up in the next town and actually lived up the street from the hospital for nine years. The place was shut down in the 70s when civil liberties groups filed lawsuits across the country. Instead of just warehousing the mentally ill, they were supposed to receive outpatioent services and live normal lives. So the hospitals emptied out. It didn't work out as planned and many of the former patients became the homeless. They wandered Norwich and every other city and town across the USA. I know a woman who was at Norwich Hospital for killing her husband. The hospital was used for those found to be "innocent by reason of insanity" but not considered a violent risk. Connecticut had a different institution for that. The hospital is really prime real estate that is just left to rot. Unfortunately, electrotherapy and ice baths were not torture; they were actually considered helpful therapy at the time. Just like in another age they might have drilled holes in their heads to let the demons out.
The architecture is beautiful but it really is a sad place.
Our local newspaper - The New London Day - in CT. has an article on 'Urban Explorers' -http://www.theday.com/...8f-b16a-332f3714c622 - that's why I'm at this site ~ I checked out a few things on this fireplace ~ here you go for anyone interested ~ those are our state tree - the Charter Oak and the emblem in the middle is 'The Armorial Bearings' - Arms of the State - the saying means - "QUI TRANSTULIT SUSTINET" (He Who Transplanted Still Sustains)

Damn, is this what all my investments were stored. I have been searching for years for this particulard safe. Motts, did you find any of my investments and anuuities from this solid safe. What the hell did they keep in this funky vault, patients valuables? You know and old crappy wallet, three bucks, yards of worthless receipts. Great shot, love you Motts.
Now we know where Mr. Rogers neighorhood was born. Do you think we might meet the king if we went on board. We'd meet the king and all of the crazy bastards that is us.
