Yes this definately was for the criminally insane. I worked at the hospital for over 25 years until it shut down. This was one tough building to work in.
If I'm not mistaken, some criminals were brought here, though what kinds of criminals they were, I'm not sure of. My Father was a police officer in a surrounding town from the late 70's until the turn of the century, and he told me he had to escort several prisoners here throughout the years he worked as a police officer, when the hospital was still open.
I prefer to think this was an overflow room, and the staff threw a bed in there for secret lunchtime quickies. But hey, who knows. Seriously I hope whoever saw the inside of this room during it's working hours didn't suffer.
Great photos, by the way.
Well I would like to start off that user CCL08 is definitly a pig. With that said Motts love the photos I have about 600+ photos from my own visits to different hospitals. This one in particular is security tight. They wouldn't even let me take photos of the outside. Good thing the casino is near by as a drove far to get in.
Well, I think it's great that it could possibly be turned back over to the state. Yes, as aforementioned, it is environmentally unsafe, and probably the reason it has yet to be either demolished or renovated is probably b/c it IS an environmental liability. Ever visit the EPA's Superfund site and look up your surrounding area? A Superfund (for anyone who doesn't know is basically a toxic wasteland) and the govt becomes responsible for or finds the responsible party to clean it up. Asbestos is usually the primary reason these types of buildings are not demolished right away. Asbestos is EXTREMELY dangerous.
At any rate, I am glad to see that it still remains, as toxic as it may be, b/c it should be cleaned up and made available as a historic landmark. Putting up ANYTHING over this place (even a film school) is wrong, and that is why the world is in such a state nowdays...b/c everyone is sooo obsessed with MONEY or themselves!! Thanks for the opportunity to ramble endlessly, Motts! The phots are breathtaking.
I'm not sure if its considered normal but when I read that this fireplace was destroyed by vandals I felt like I could, quite frankly, rip someone's head off. What disregard for such beauty and history. They must have little respect for anything. It's disgusting. WTF? What is wrong with ppl today.
