I saw a documentary on Poveglia, it was originally used to exile victims of the second major outbreak of bubonic plague in the 1500's (i think) and then a mental hospital was built there, then abandoned. It is actually off limits to citizens now, many think it is cursed and/or haunted.... it is near venice, by the way
