I once applied for a job at this hospital and at the time I felt the fortress like appearance and an overwhelming sense of sadness emanating from this acharic ediface.
I recall when I worked at Worcester State Hospital back in 1953.I wasn't ther e to,log but the few memories I have are sill prominent in my mind. One was taking the the clients to supper . We had to gather all of them and closley watch them as we marched down a long hall way or to the main kitchen in the basement of the administrtion Bldg.
To my first encounter with this routine I was amazed how a few of the cilents would deficate in the tunnels ,on the way to dinner or supper. Then after we got through eating we marched them back to their wards , A janitor would hose down all that was left behind into serwer like basins in the tunnel.
It was horrifying to me bu tI accepted it aa part of life that went on in there.
I also recall giving the females baths .These poor creatures need ed help in the showers So we would put bathing suits on to help them clean up. It was a hard time for adjustments in the State system then.
There is more to say but now I am retired from the Commonwealth of Mass
after retiring from Westboro State Hospital from 1983 and this year our of Lord 2006,............Beatrice Vincequere
I know that this is really pretty late in the game. But the other building in the back that you speak of, was a children's ward.
Thats the building my mother was working in back in the 80's when my family had just moved to Worcester.
She was given a tour before the fire wiped out so much. I regret her memory doesnt work the same way as mine.
She does however remember that there were still chains like you'd expect for animals down in the tunnels that linked the buildings.
My father who was also given a tour, spent his time in the Air Force running a psych ward, and was also offered a job at WSH when they moved up here.
From the people who worked there, the round buildings had held cages suspended from the ceilings in the beginning of the hospital's life.
Anyways, late in the game, but still, I do love this site, especially for a better look inside our hospital. I've only been in the outer most buildings.
23 years ago I had an internship next door at the more "modern" hospital and we used to explore the abandoned buildings during our breaks. We saw several cell-like rooms with restraining devices. Filing cabinets full of documentation from 19th century. Creapy baths and showers. Yet the place we worked in wasn't much different, with its padded rooms, desks with straps for autistic children, etc....
IF YOU LOOK CAREFULLY AND LONG ENOUGH AT THE LOWER RIGHT HAND WINDOW, IT LOOKS AS THOUGH SOMEONE IS PEEKING THROUGH IT AND AT THE SAME TIME CLENCHING THE CURTAINS CLOSED WITH THEIR FISTS LASPED TOGETHER, GO AHEAD LOOK, DONT SEE IT YET?, LOOK AGAIN!
OK HERE IS WHAT I SEE...ON THE END OF THE RIGHT BENCH, IS THAT A URINAL PAN OR A BUNT CAKE PAN?
UNDERNEATH OF THE LEFT BENCH I SEE WHAT LOOKS LIKE A WHIP/LASSO??/ HMM..WHAT THE HECK TOOK PLACE HERE EH? AND IF YOU LOOK AT THE FRONT LOWER LEFT HAND CORNER ON THE WALL IT LOOKS LIKE AN ORA....
My first thought was "skeletal remains" eww that is so freaky! I Would love to see this carriage first hand seriously, i live not too far from there...
