The state was always very paranoid that someone, anyone might get something from the state and resell it for a profit. The state didn't have a mechanism nor did it want to create one to get rid of items that were no longer useful. Vast storage buildings were created to house old furniture and equipment. Over the years it would deteriorate and just sit there until thrown away. But you couldn't get your hands on any of it. In back of Bldg. 93 was a dump with a high chain link fence. Many times I witnessed beds, furniture of all kinds, etc. dumped there out of trucks and crushed using back hoes. When I asked I was told that was done to prevent anyone from "stealing" it. Made a lot of sense, huh? I guess when the hospital was abandoned, they just left most everything that was remaining in the rooms. Whatever was useable when we moved to Pilgrim Psychiatric Center we took with us. However, PPC had its own stuff like desks and chairs and not much was transferred besides records and supplies.
The buildings you can see from the Long Island Expressway are the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center. They appear similar to Bldg. 93 at KPPC, but actually are much larger. I worked at all three facilities: CI,KPPC and PPC. I was a Nurse 3 and I had an office in Bldg 93 in the lobby of the main entrance in 1990. The firehouse was across the street. We (the employees) played softball in the field across the street from 93. Sometimes at lunch we would go to the bluffs and eat while looking out over Long Island Sound from a height of about 150 feet. Memories.

this is my favorite building at KPPC, and now that demo has started in the powerplant, its one of the few buildings u can still get into, although, all first level entrances are welded as well as windows and tunnel entrances, ...a bit of climbing never hurt anyone =]

sexylioness, if you are advocating a return to lobotomizing people that is incredibly offensive.
Ive been here a few times also inside some of the buildings. Some of the patients were turned over by their family to the state. We as humans test on animals which I think is worse, why not test on humans. These were people that showed unrecoginizable behavior and were not responsive to normal humal connection. I believe in the lobotomies that were done maybe they couldve prevented what happened in ct.....
Ha ha. This was called the mezzanine. If you look on the steel beams you may find steel hooks. They were to hold up fire extinguishers. I put these up!
I worked here this was my favorite spot. This is the coal bunker. Yes coal did come in on a conveyor. I made 80hrs a week overtime. I know this place well
