KINGS PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – An iconic structure at the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center has been brought down.

Demolition experts used 27 sticks of dynamite strategically placed at the base of the 220-foot brick smokestack to take down the decades-old structure, WCBS 880′s Mike Xirinachs reported.

The ground shook and some onlookers screamed as the smokestack went down.

Many residents who grew up in the shadow of the smokestack said it’s like saying goodbye to an old friend.

WARNING: Graphic Language

“It’s been there for a while so there’s some sentimental value there,” one man said. “I’m going to miss it.”

“I worked there for a while, my parents worked there, anybody that has grown up in the town has in some way been connected to that hospital,” another man said.

Local historian Stephen Weber said he’s sad to see the landmark go.

“Because in many ways, even before GPS, that’s how you navigated. You looked for the tower and it helped you navigate. It saved many a fisherman way before the times of radar and other things and it was always a part of our community,” Weber told WCBS 880′s Sophia Hall.

Others think the structure is an eyesore and are happy to see it go.

“Being as close as we are to it we’re all happy to see it go,” one man said. “That’s a part of our time a lot of us would like to forget.”

The implosion is part of ongoing demolition of the center which closed in 1996.

My gpa contracted asbestosis from working at tgd brooklyn booker company. He died a few years ago a week b4 Thanksgiving. It does eat away at your lungs and he struggled with every breath he took in the end. it is a horrible condition to watch someone you care about struggle with and it is painful. To all my fellow explorers spend the few extra bucks and get the masks b4 you spend more then money fighting a horrible condition that you could have prevented like asbestosis and mesothelioma. Stay curious and artistic! Loveruins!!!!!!!

Wow, first off, Motts I love photography, its simply a side hobby for me and nothing near as powerful as your stuff, but the comments Im reading, I knew there was some horror stories, but as a kid I believed them to be made up like the stories of Mt. Misery. As a dumb kid I trespassed onto these grounds and some of the things I saw I just told my brain it was other dumb kids messing around, it was a whillllllleeee back, but I remember building 22 I think, I know it was a childrens ward, I remember Disney Characters on the walls, and a chalk board with the saddest most heart breaking scribbles, God help us, save us, things like that and I just thought it couldn't be real, the what seemed to be blood stains, I thought surely those who operated these buildings would never have let it be seen in this condition that lawsuits would have been a sure thing if this had been real. To anyone who had to experience these places by force my heart truly breaks for you, I am so very sad that as a kid, I possibly may have disturbed some souls that will never find peace, and I do hope with all my heart that you find yours, your safe now. I am very very sorry!

Wow, there is a show on SyFy called stranded that recently has me reminiscing about my thrill seeking childhood. Talking about the show with a coworker today led to telling stories about sneaking onto the grounds on a few scary stupid horrifying occassions, this loading dock was the first time we had ever been, we were standing up there trying to poke our flashlights inside when the flash light was torn from my friends hands whether it be by a bum or paranormal has still been undecided but it scared the hell out of all of us, we all turned and ran and lucky me ran right off the side of the loading dock twisted my ankle and was left terrified hurt and all alone! I remember hoping to get caught by the cops so they would just bring me back home safe and sound! Dumb stupid adrenaline junkie kids, I guess it was better to be addicted scary thrills than drugs and such though. Stranded is a pretty great show though for anyone interested in paranormal activity, wednesday nights, I didnt sleep a wink last night!
It is not broken cracked glass; as first thought: they are thin branches outside the window, reflecting in the pool of water. Genius you are. What a shot. May you always be well:
Thank you for all the pictures of building 93 from all angles. Thoroughly enjoy them all. Unbelievable it is just standing there in all it´s glory but also in it´s uselessness.
It is magnificent and splendid indeed. Unforgettable. HUGE!
The World is a very strange place!
No, it does not look abandoned at all, at first sight. It looks like a hotel. Or an apartment.building. It is splendid!
But then, as Larry D writes. no light in the windows!!! A heart-breaker! Useless beauty! It is a fine photo.
Ohhhh they are growing Downwards getting the water from the "skating-rink" in winter. Clever plants! This is a good photo!
