There's pictures of my great aunt circa 1940 with a walker sort of like this. You stood inside the apartus and held the front handles to walk then they could put a cushioned board across the poles behind you for sitting when you got fatigued. I don't remmber what my kin's ailment was but she never walked well and died quite young.
