That's definitely Asbestos covered with canvas and bituminous mastic. All pipe covering used to get covered in Canvas and mastic.
No they do not still use Asbestos. It has been outlawed since 73. Insulators do still use bituminous mastic's to coat canvas or fiberglass mesh especially in odd shaped hot places like that valve where it might become necessary for the workmen to tear it off to repair a leak. Much easier than dealing with metal. Otherwise industrial insulation is usually covered in aluminum sheet metal these days. The mastic can also be white or grey.

I think they may have had chains around them which drove something else and the holes are for the center guides on the chain.

Reminds me of work. :-\
I wonder how this place looks today?

Thanks Motts for another great gallery--always checking for the next one to come up!
Oh, the greenery here is so beautiful!
Laying every single brick must have taken forever!
Cool shot!
Exactly Motts! That's what I've been thinking. At night this place would be downright dangerous--nothing a good, powerful flashlight couldn't solve I suppose. My Maglite is my best friend, lol.
Lol, yeah it is!

Those massive holes in the floor scare me
I love the rust colors!
Wow, just fascinated with these things!
I meant it WASN'T a pretty site, sorry
I bet this was a noisy and dangerous place to work back in the day. Just imagine the wind and suction coming from one of these flywheels!

The old steel plant I mentioned before had several of these massive flywheels and back when the plant was in use, a guy was eating his lunch near one of these things (they didn't have a safety gate up around these flywheels until after his death). Not sure why in the heck he chose to eat right there, well, it was a pretty site, what was left of him, according to the reports.
I love old factories like this. Reminds me of an old furnace plant near me that I like walking around sometimes.

This photo is so crisp and sharp!

Those are some pretty treacherous holes over to the right-would hate to not see those at night!
I don't think I would have went any further. Beautiful greenery though.
