Yup they are steam radiators, the pipe goes up from the floor and to the ceiling.

Most of the windows panes were framed in metal; I suppose they were locked up most of the time or it wasn't an issue. There were bars selectively places on some windows as well.

This appears to be a bathing station for an invalid. These were built so that patients could be stretched out in a lying position and be washed using a sprayer. The neck would rest in the depression to the sink basin allowing the nurse to wash the hair.

High ceilings allow the rooms to be cooler in the summer months. Back in the days when this place was built, they had no air conditioning. The only way to keep the place somewhat cool was to have high ceilings with transoms that allowed the heat buildup at the highest points to escape.
those bathtubs are all over the place!
nothing like prancing around in your birthday suit after a nice bath
Is that a soap dispenser I see on the right wall? Sorry, but someone was going to mention it sooner or later :)
make sure you bring a toothbrush! hehehe
Motts, can't begin to tell you the difference your photography has made in my view of the world around me. I see beauty in places I previously thought of as trash. Thank you for sharing your vision with us.
What a beautiful view. I don't know. . . if I was in that hospital and had that view to look at every day, I don't know that I'd want to get well and go home to a city apartment. I think I'd just want to stay there.
steam heat actually heats pretty good. I just looked at a house and in the basement was this big old balst furnace boiler type furnace, the man said it was from the 1970's. A bit scary in my book, but I'll tell you that house was pretty warm and the thermostat was only at 65 degrees.
That was a LONG gallery...I am exhausted from looking at each pic and commenting on them, but very happy!!!

WELCOME BACK!!!!!!! I know everyone said it already, but you have been sorely missed and I can't wait to see more pics from your travels!

Please take care, and be careful when you travel ok?
