the graffiti in this picture is not done by artists, people expressing themselves, or even valdals. this graffiti is done by stupid drunk teenagers that dont even know how to hold a can. you cant even call this graffiti.... its trash. to a graff writer, graffiti is a part of there lives not just somthing they do. its a part of there lives that they leave behind were ever they go. its more than expessing them selves... its also a way to find themselves. ive been in this hospital. and iv also been to places that are only visited by graff writers. ive both seen and done what civilians call beutifull graffiti. and im sorry that this hospital was destroyed by not graff writers but bitches that dont know what graffiti is. graff can either make or brake a photo and i agree that in this case it brakes it... but atleast these idiots that did this can say that they explored the sights that were all comenting on, instead of siting on there fat asses and complaining about somthing they dont have the balls to do in the first place. but hey life is all about opinion.

When the place was consrtucted, it was considered state of the art. This was the place for humane care. As hellish as it seems to have been, consider what it had been like prior to Dorothea Dix's crusading efforts. I wish a lot of people could see the really old pictures of the place. There are 2 books around As The Century Turned Danvers 1890 to 1910 and Danvers 1850 to 1899. Both with Richard Trask as author, or contributing author. They have some marvelous photos of the new Kirkbride building and the grounds. The gardens were truly amazing. As much of a craphole Danvers State became after it was abandoned, It's a testament to how well it was constructed in the first place. Once upon a day all the crap you seeing as decay and rot was brand new and a not bad place to be.
The curtains were put up there to provide a smidgen of privacy from the out doors. Beds were located in the alcoves because of overcrowding. I didn't take these snap shots Pam I worked there from 1976 until it closed. The Picture credits belong to Mr. Motts
You mustn't forget that these mental hospitals held mental patients in them. Some patients were a danger to themselves and to others so certain steps have to be taken to ensure that they and those around them are kept safe. The bars over the windows were not a way to imprison someone inside the institution, but were a way to keep them safe from harm. I am uncertain what story this room is at Danvers however even a second story fall from a building can be fatal.
The curtains over the windows were not an attempt to be sketchy but were an attempt to make the atmosphere for the patient more pleasant. You mustn't automatically assume things from how you initially see them.
If you were a patient at this hospital and you were unable to control yourself like you do today would you not prefer that the administration take steps to keep you safe like putting bars over your windows so that you wouldn't be able to just crash through the glass and falling to your death and certain bodily disarrangement? And then wouldn't you appreciate it if they took it a step more and tried to make your settings warmer by adding curtains in your room? I think you would.
So please try not to be so narrow minded and think things through before automatically thinking torture and human destruction.
