I think the reason our Mr Motts puts in his famous and much loves "lonely char shot' is because every time you see one your reminded that people once lived and worked in these places. they remind you that dreams, hope, purpose and life in these once. Now they are lonely and forgotten buildings. They help you remember the people and the stories they left behind.

No need to wonder -- The exciter provides DC power to the field coils on the rotor of the generator to create the magnetic field. When the rotor is turned by the turbine the magnetic field spins and passes through the coils (armature) of the generator to generate electricity.
