Janice, this safe is "triple secure". There are the inner doors, the middle door, and the then the outer door. The door to the left stacks on top of the inner doors and then the door on the right neatly closes over it all. The "shelf" on the inside of the outer door probably held some "petty cash" or other things needed for everyday use. This eliminated having to open the whole darn thing to get 5 bucks out.

I hate to burst anyone's bubble regarding the humane treatment of institutionalized people at the time most of these buildings were experiencing their heyday but it "was" common in this country well into the 1950s to conduct medical experiments on people who were disabled, insane, convicts and those with mental retardation. Just take a closer look at the research of early medical pioneers like Jonas Salk. It was a different time with different ideology. By the way, the photos on this site are gorgeous.

I grew up in Foxboro, My Grandfather was the Head Electrician at the Foxboro State Hospital. I notice in all these pictures you didn't get to the tunnels that run/ran under and across the street to other buildings.
