I was a staff member at the Metropolitan State Hospital from 1952 up intill 1969 and I have to say that some of the treatment of patents by the staff was absolutely outragous. You would see patents being physically and mentally abused quite frequently including the younger pre-teen patents that I knew of who passed through the childrens ward. The staff was quite merciless and cruel toward patents and I will never forget the 16 tough years that I spent here and I will never forgive the horrible staff.
This is just disgusting, sensless waste. One of my friends has a couch quite similar to that in his office. The wood is ornately carved and the seat backs/cushions are velvet stuffed with I THINK horsehair( whatever it is, it's damned uncomfortable to sit on!). It belonged to his great grandmother and dates from somewhere in the 19th century. The couch in this room could be the twin of this one (esp since his mother's family originally came from New England)
Nonetheless, Motts, thank you for capturing it for us yet again! ;)
I worked at this place from 1989-1991. I was a Rec. Therapist and worked evenings and weekends. We played Badminton and Frisbee in this Courtyard all the time. The whole place gave everyone the creeps. I did not know about the documented murder or the graveyard! There were plenty of rumors about other stories though. You've outdone yourself capturing its creepiness.
I remember going here in summer of 2002 but i cant remember if the chandeliers were up or down. It was also around 1am so it was dark. Private tour for about 6 of us from one of the guards.
I worked there -- behind that door was a small room, furnished with a metal bed that we would tie the patients to when they needed to be restrained. We'd actually always leave the door open when somebody was tied to the bed, and they'd be watched the entire time to make sure they didn't struggle too much or get free or manage to hurt themselves.
