I wonder how many lives were lost within this confinement? How does one justify fourty or fifty years in a hospital withonly a blank folder to state their treatment during hte time they where there.
I was a patient in " Ward D" in Easter 1985 and remember visiting the chapel for the Easter Sunday service. Some of the congregation were in a bad way but the service was very moving indeed. I left the hospital on Easter Monday and had to walk home as thetre were no buses!

was spooky but fun
spent 20 years at whittingham nursing happiest time of my working life by far. its sad to see the place now it did not close for the patients benefit but a lot of greedy fat cat managers made a killing.
however good memories live on thanks to these sites

i cant belive you managed to get into the chapel we can never get in there ever. one of the security guards quit because when he was doing a patrol all of the lights came on and he heard an organ playing from inside

These rooms were actually padded cells and could only be opened from the outside.I was at pre nursing college and went on the ward one day and a patient was in one with just a mattress to lie on and nothing else but padded walls
Even being so old, its quality is apparent...
nice, almost gothic....
Blue hue, how peaceful....
Escape hatch....
remember doing my work placement here, upsetting to see such a magnificent buliding rotting away when it could be put to such good use, why have avondale when patients could have continued to have lovely surroundings like at whittingham????????????? and probably got better sooner as a result
went to lovely xmas concert many years ago, such a shame to see the state of things now. Why leave such a lovely buliding like whittingham to rot like this??????
