They used to put lots of photos of patients into frames and display them on the wall. It would have been lost when the ward finally closed.
I worked at the hospital until it's closure. I still work at the secure mental health unit that was built on the old St John's Division. The old hospital has now all but been demolished. It will be no more by spring 2015. Thank you for the fantastic photos. I've been taking some myself Over the last few weeks but I have none of your skill.

I have been to whittingham asylum and there are security, its not average police tho, its private security firms and they do patrol the area. They are currently demolishing the asylum to create room for more houses. Very few buildings remain
Peek-a-boo! I see stairs! : )
I really like the perspective on this shot!
Stunning photo, Motts! Folks, I don't think those asbestoes(sp?) abatement people busted out all those windows in their search for asbestos! : D
Thanks, John, for all the insider info about this place! It helps to make Motts' photos even more interesting (even tho I didn't think that was possible)!

I, too, really think old places like this should be renovated instead of being razed....But, Lady Chadwicke? When you're looking at a photo of former 'seclusion rooms', what in the world made you think of the word ''enchantment'''? If you'd actually ever witnessed someone getting put into seclusion, I think the word ''nightmare'' might have popped into your mind first! That word or ''upset''' enters my mind. But people do need to see Motts' pictures, partly so we don't return to some of our old ways of doing things.
How nice! This shot makes me want to step intlo the photo with à lawn chair & my MP3 Player, and just chill out.

John, I think it's sad that this is one of the only open corridors at Whittingham! It probably would have done the patients good to get outside more when the weather was fair.
That's sad that several decades ago so often times that would happen. Today wé're supposed to have better oversight of special needs persons, the elderly, and the mentally ill. But, unfortunately, you still occasionally will hear reports of cases of negfect and/or abuse.

Motts, thanks for another staircase shot! II really like the tile pattern on the floor, too. Pretty!
Hmm...Some people just don't understand 'soap diispensers'; do they Lynne? :)

FANTASTIC, Motts!! Yet another unique and totally awesome photo to feed my staircase fetish with! (heh-heh!)
Yep! It's définitely an escape hatch! The poor chair is asking everyone why they left it behind? (*whimper*)
Ah, yes! Pink, again! I don't know when tbis place was last painted, but there were studies done, (commissioned by NIMH) back in the 1980s, that the color that is most calming to humans is Pink! That's probably why you've seen it in a lot hospitals since the 80s and maybe even in prisons, as well. I would have thought Blue would be the most calming color to people, but I guess not!.....Hey, Motts! I know there's stairs hiding there somewhere amongst all that rosy pink! 8 D
WOW! This one is nice! I REALLY likey! : )
Oh YUCK! My least favorite picture of this Gallery, even tho it is true to life. It's just so sad how junkies live (if you can call it living)!
