The kiln wouldn't be very hot from the outside, actually. Kiln brick is extremely insulating. It is the radiant heat that is dissipated during cooling that really builds up.

Motts, thank you for posting such beautiful pictures. This cemetery reminds me of a cemetery I used to walk through on my lunch break. I have since moved away and forgot how much I missed going there until I saw this set.
