No they do not still use Asbestos. It has been outlawed since 73. Insulators do still use bituminous mastic's to coat canvas or fiberglass mesh especially in odd shaped hot places like that valve where it might become necessary for the workmen to tear it off to repair a leak. Much easier than dealing with metal. Otherwise industrial insulation is usually covered in aluminum sheet metal these days. The mastic can also be white or grey.

Exactly Motts! That's what I've been thinking. At night this place would be downright dangerous--nothing a good, powerful flashlight couldn't solve I suppose. My Maglite is my best friend, lol.

The old steel plant I mentioned before had several of these massive flywheels and back when the plant was in use, a guy was eating his lunch near one of these things (they didn't have a safety gate up around these flywheels until after his death). Not sure why in the heck he chose to eat right there, well, it was a pretty site, what was left of him, according to the reports.
