The iron lung (sealed and air tight - with just the person's neck and head sticking out) increases and decreases the air pressure inside the chamber. When the air pressure in the lungs is less than that outside the person's body (i.e., the chamber), air is sucked into the nose so the person breathes; when the air pressure increases, the air is expelled. The machine literally breathes for the person. NOT a place you want to worry about a back-up generator. :-(
