I went there with about 5 or 6 friends of mine back in '05. We went up the train tracks around the back. We walked for about a mile or 2 and it was cold as fuck going through the tunnel. We arrived behind the back of the adult hospital and walked inside. I remembered seeing signs that read, NO TRESPASSING and ASBESTOS WARNING. The hallways had holes in the floor and walls everywhere, and I remember being on edge, hoping to God that cops wouldn't see us. I saw this dead vulture that was hanging from a wall with blood smeared around it. That shit scared the fuck outta me. It was like somebody had performed some kinda ritual or somethin. I don't think that we were the only ones there that night, either. I also heard other people screaming and acting stupid around there... Like the cats I was there with weren't? lol We explored the laundry room, which still had beat up and overturned dryers in it. Also, we went into an office, or a room which was on the 2nd floor. There were old newspapers EVERYWHERE from the late 70's and early 80's. I saw a few bed frames with jutted coils. I tried hard most of the time to keep from breathing in the air, as it was stuffy anyways that day, and the asbestos warning really freaked me out. I saw the former patient rooms that were derelict with ripped out toilets, and wiring strewn about, and the aqua colored tile... which I always associated with eerie, outdated hospitals. It certainly was a creepy experience, fun nonetheless, though. There was a full moon out that night, and I remember the back of the building looking beautiful with the moon reflecting on parts of the windows. Really eerie, but really beautiful stuff. Lord knows it'll prolly get demolished some day, and with all the cops that are there now, no doubt it was a great priveledge to say that I was able to see what I had saw so recently, and without getting caught. Heh-heh, I even had a dream about this place about 2 weeks back... Scared the fuck out of me. In real life I was with a few people... In the dream... I was ALONE. I saw shit in there, I hope nobody will see in real life. Glenn Dale is one place you DO NOT want to go to ALONE. ;)
Well, blue lamp, I live in the area, but it seems like they've just kind of closed off the area. No renovations are actually taking place yet as far as I can tell.
It's really amazing you managed to ever get in this place. I walk by it seemingly everyday and I was never able to pick out any viable entrance. It's good that I can look through this gallery to finally pique my childhood curiosity as to what's actually inside Hotel Sterling.
Interesting that so many found this Masonic...they are so interesting. And I seem to have seen this kind of chandeliers in many places Motts has explored.
I've had to make the decision to file a "mental hygiene" petition to have a person committed to a psychiatric facility. It is never a decision made without very careful consideration and exhaustion of whatever alternatives may be available to help the person. An emergency appointment with the psychiatrist, medication adjustments, intensive outpatient or partial hospitalization, admission to an unlocked crisis residential unit...only when an alternative is unavailable or has not worked does commitment become the best option. I know it wasn't always like this (often because there was no intensive treatment available in the community), but things have changed. Some of the situations in which I have petitioned for commitment include patients who were so out of control due to psychosis that they singlehandedly trashed a general hospital's emergency room before they could be restrained by hospital security guards with the assistance of several city police officers. In another case, a patient had attempted suicide by cutting her wrists and taking an overdose of pills. In the emergency room she refused to sign a "no suicide" contract and stated over and over that when she got out of the ER, she would find a way to kill herself. The family member with her was certain that she *would* continue suicide attempts until she succeeded. She would not have been safe in the community. There are also times when professionals miss signs or wait too long, and there are tragic, deadly results.
