I've had a bit of a dig about online, and couldn't find anything exactly the same - but I'm with ion_2004. The mechanics suggest some sort of industrial laundry press.

It's still going to bug me until someone comes up with a definite answer, though!

From what I have seen so far, this building would be one heck of a place to restore. Hard to think someone would let such a place go...

I love the textures in this photo. The symmetrical, somewhat harsh pattern of the tiles on the roof and the softer, more calming effect of the trees and grass.
