They were locked up as they could be sharpened into stabbing tools by simply grinding them on a cement wall or floor.

this is one of my all time fav pictures on here. catches the eye and just sticks to the brain. brilliant. amazing. now im lost for words.

The knobs at the bottom and on the left are to adjust the carbon rod rotation speed and rate of 'Feed'. It actually took patience and real skill to operate these as they required constant fine tuning 'On the fly'. If the rods touched for anything other than initial start-up for more than a few seconds, it would burn the 'Cone' which held the rods and focused the light onto the mirrors. Really the most expensive part of the system which could essentially "Total" it. Very cool in any perspective. :-)

Yes, carbon arc lighting looking at the size of the can.

Although the colors are awesome, these lamps are remeniscent of the lamps at the Dentists office. "Is it safe?" :-D
