I think that spot on the false door is an electrical outlet for a sconce.

I just noticed something else. If you look at he bottom on the left or the right side you can see what looks like drawer guides and they go the full depth of that space if it is a closet or whatever it is so there is nothing behind the case after all :(

I think it is the combination of how the light is lighting the area above the shelves and that door on the right which makes it seem both cases are in a closet with a door.

Someone needs to get up there and kill those trees that have taken root on the roof. Or saving the joint may not be in the cards.
