I think when a major reno is needed on a place like this, it would then trigger a requirement that it be fully updated to current code. That and fixing the damage could easily exceed the cost of a new building. That's my guess.

That line would be the actual sea level. I think the lowest areas below sea level in NO were about 15 feet or so. The entire area is sinking as a natural process for river delta deposits.

hard to believe this place can't be saved! Iknow, it's cliche... but they just don't build them like this anymore and I think it's a shame the way we Americans just trash our culture... I lived in Germany for 5 years andcan tell you this would not be demolished there. it would become an integral part of the city center and it's history. folks in Europe are proud of their culture,identifies, and accomplishments. here we'll put up a n ugly "hotel 6"and think that's progress...just saying!there's a better way to move forward without ditching where we came from and the clues to our true identity/cultural traits...... what say, U,huh!???!!,
