I think I understand that desire, Kikyo. Something draws people like us to these old buildings... not just the building, but the lifeforce once within and the fact that it's passed. Strange and sad story. What a pic... constructed with shades of the Greco-Roman. The Parthenon was made with talent and reverence to last thousands of years. This was built with similar craftsmanship, only to be felled after 155 years......

Oh, every object back when, even the most eveyday, ignored and mundane was so solid and beautifully made... sigh... unlike today

This is a great photo essay - given the kind of garbage they build these days, for just about any building type, I am always baffled at the efforts they used to put forth in antique architecture...ESPECIALLY for industrial/municipal purposes like this - my favorite shots are those of the ornate fireplace and doorway, but tops is the shot of the oval MARBLE walled room looking out towards the generator...Really great stuff, Motts! (For what it's worth, I send you as much traffic here as I can find - most people are stunned when they see it...)

Makes me sad that electricity prices in my area are rising and then to see a power plant like this moth-balled. We have so much hydro power and wind power capability in this area (I am from Rochester) but it goes unused. They are also talking about adding a power plant at the upper falls in Rochester, NY. Although, I am sure the project will die because no one can agree on the best way.

Sir Motts- I live in Rochester, NY so I make it to Niagara falls once or twice a year. I love this place (both the American side and Canadian side are great). Great photos, great story and great to see something local for me. Thanks again!

Basically the only people I remember are Mike, Tony, Kim, Sharon, the Colored Girl, and Danny.
I remember Danny because of his god awful feet!
As far as staff, Jack the asshole, the Hook, and Willie.
Those are the ones that come quickly to mind.

I think I was one of the last ones to go roller skating in town from D Ward.
From your other comments, you said you was in the same room as Kim C.
I remember 3 of the six from that room. Kim C, A Colored Girl that was dating Mike and Sharon who had the hots for Tony.

It was Mike and I who went down to the room, Mike was there seeing the colored girl and I was there seeing Kim, Sharon was hoping Tony was coming down but Tony didn't want to.
After Kim and I broke up Kim started dating Mike.

The round holes in the end of some of these were actually for turning them (notable the pieces with 2 offset holes) ... image a giant socket but instead of a wrench you would plug a pipe in and twist the whole section., not that it makes them any smaller or lighter. I am curious if you can say where the floor vent on the left went through too.

I had the strangest feeling in the world when I first saw pictures of this place on the internet. I could have sworn I knew the place -- as if I had lived there long ago. All the pictures seemed very very familiar to me, even though I did not know that this place ever existed until today.

I am digging that old phone on the desk!
