I would be so curious as to what was behind that padlocked door, but then that's what the zombies would want, huh? Lol. Nah but seriously I'd be really curious
Living within a short drive of this place, it had always been a dream of mine (and still is) to get inside to look around. Now I get to see what it actually looks like in here! Thanks Motts!
A friend and I tried to get photos of this beautiful building standing on the lawn, well away from the building and were run off by police.
I do hope they put this gorgeous "old lady" to good use though.
I believe this place was built in the late 1800's. It's "sister" state hospital is correctly known as "Old Bryce" mental institute and located on the campus of Univ of Tuscaloosa. That is one creepy looking place! Were you all able to get in there? They used to let paranormal teams in do investigations but that stopped and the place is heavily patrolled now. It's been my dream to be able to get in there, at least to walk around and see the place.
Poor building looks nothing like this now. Very eerie out there at night, looking up at this huge building, looming in the darkness.
Motts, I am familiar with the S.D Allen nursing home that sits next door. I know you don't believe in the paranormal, but my team and I have gotten some of the most incredible evidence ever from that place and it's nowhere near the size of the Jemision bldg. Unreal experiences!
But thanks for doing a location in my neck of the woods! Hope we get to see more from AL!
This is almost the place I was standing in broad daylight and snapping photos of this side of the building. Went back to review and saw a transparent figure of what appeared to be a nurse in a white hat and uniform! Couldn't believe my eyes but it was there, clear as day.
By the way, it sure does look like a figure in that 2nd floor, 4th window from the left!
Sadly all the HVAC units have been torn down and the floor is nowhere near this "clean" now. But you're right, this building is built like a tank, despite massive roof damage. The stair wells are steel and the floors solid concrete.
It was a beautiful building back in its day and it did indeed have a white dome. Rumor has it some teens set a fire in the attic part, triggering a 3 fire alarm and totally destroying the roof (the 3rd floor is still intact though).
