I'd guess these were all hand sculpted. Very much time and skill involved. There's folks that would like this stuff and preserve it. Even if this guy is a coat stand in somebody's front hallway, it's better than smashing it.

Looks like this complex was in a rough neighborhood. Beautiful buildings just left to get trashed and attacked. Funding was pulled for some reason. Perhaps the costs of updating to building codes, internal church politics, neighborhood went down the toilet. All of the above.
