The stalactites were incredibly thin, delicate straws of calcite which reached down from the ceilings. These are known as "soda straw" stalactites, where the inner diameter of the straw is the width of the single water droplets that travel downwards over the decades. The gentlest brush against one will shatter it into hundreds of glass-like shards.
