The Big Dig

This brick building was last used by the Phoenix House, a residential program which helped people recover from drug abuse. The image of the phoenix bird can still be seen painted on the central wall. It closed in 1976, and was the last residential institution operating on the island.

As usual, we went to the top floor to survey the area. My first photo out this window shows the trenches being dug right inside the courtyard. The partially filled trench is covered with a piece of plywood; behind it are pine caskets. PVC pipes can be seen sticking out of the ground, which are numbered to mark the location of the graves.
