The holidays are a great time to explore buildings, as security is usually minimally staffed and nosy neighbors are busy watching television and cooking food. That fall, I had heard Pennhurst was starting to take a beating, literally. Fires were being lit in the buildings, and the contents of the buildings were being defenestrated at a rapid pace. A friend and I wanted to sort of say goodbye to Pennhurst - it really was an amazing looking hospital, and watching it get destroyed and turned into a Halloween joke just wasn't an option. So, on Thanksgiving morning we set out to watch the sun filter through the intense yellow of the foliage, past the rust-stained window panes, and onto the decaying remnants of a disturbing past.
