Made me sad when they tore it down. My Younger Brother and Oldest Son went to kindergarten there.

The door on the left side of the photo led to the boys' bathroom. The girls' door is out of the pic. As far as I knew at the time, those were the ONLY bathrooms for students in the place, and our (2nd Floor) class had two gang-style bathroom breaks a day; one in the morning and one in the afternoon. If someone needed to go at any other time, it was a long walk downstairs.

The door on the right led from the cafeteria. Upper grades ate in the gym at portable tables. Those of us in the lower grades (I only went there for 1st grade before our family moved to Butte, Montana) ate in a dining area - 4 kids to the table - in the cafeteria.

That platform in front of the proscenium wasn't there when I attended 1st Grade at Arlington School back in 1963-64. The floor seats went right up to within four feet or so of the stage, and there were stairs on each side (they're probably still there under the newer addition in this photo). The main entrance was on the second floor (where my room was), and the balcony entrance was on the 3rd floor. I was in a big music show and a little class play that year, and seeing that room from that stage, with every seat filled, made such a huge impression on me that performing has become a 40-plus-year career (so far). Too bad they couldn't save it.
That's a small gym...

It's funny that you think an adult Klan member did the graffiti. I was raised in Bessemer in the 90s and the town has practically been all black since then. No white adults go walking around that part of downtown Bessemer. Probably more likely the result of one of the few white kids still left in that town.
