271 Comments for Acme Coke Plant

On push for hot and two pushes for bake potato.
We always used two layers of aluminum foil for the task and place the items in the gear near the pusher ram.
I worked various repair jobs for Willputte in the 70s and had the opportunity to meet many different people, and work many different plants
Once a lid man In Detroit shared his cooking recipes with me, he was doing steak and potatoes on a charging lid when we first met. I’ll never forget how good it tasted.
Craig L you da man!
old man, i assumed you worked there?
lost my virginity under that tower

I worked here for 26 years, was one of the last workers to leave after the mill closed. Very sad time in my life, the closing affected a lot of good people and a great comunitty.

That's pretty wild, thanks for the memories Randy, and sorry about your friend; it still amazes me how dangerous these places are to work at.
I could remember back in the early 70's, when I was running the coke side door machine, "beating on these door latches" with a sledge hammer. We could put a man on the moon but here I am beating on these doors. One time when I was having trouble with a door latch the "Hot Car Man" came inside my machine to help me beat the door on. I had moved the latch into position and "pinched" my thumb on this latch. The next thing I knew I was laying on the floor of the machine. I had blacked out. I never said anything to my buddy "Hot Car Mike" who himself some years later, died in the steel mill being crushed to death.

I do not know what this object is that is hanging from the side of the wall but I do know what it reminds me of.

This object looks like the creature that was in one of the original
"Outer Limits" television shows.

The name of the show was called "Corpus Earthling"
that aired on Monday, November 18, 1963, almost 50 years ago.

In that show there were aliens that looked liked ordinary rocks.
These rocks were about the size of footballs. They would come alive and attack you and take over your body. The plan of these aliens was to take over planet earth. But isn't that always the plan of aliens ?

Anyway that is what this object looks like and reminds me of.

You can watch this Outer Limits show on hulu.

Looks like the coke wharf where hot coke was dumped to cool before loading in a conveyor. The object was just a wedge to divert coke from laying against an upright support beam. The coke cooled, then fell down a chute when doors were opened at the bottom of the slope.
