@Jon-I fully agree-it is a shame that these old estates are left to rot...I like your description of the ornate room-I too picture a beautiful chandelier. They don't build such hand-crafted structures anymore, so these ones need to be preserved.

I remember seeing those bars on all the windows outside when I was a kid...all these pictures of WSH really do capture the sad and sombre tone of this place. It makes one wonder what the patient was thinking and feeling as he/she was looking out beyond the bars.

I love these old stairwells-they bring so much character to this place. You wonder how many lives went up and down those stairs and what their life was like...

Hey Mr. Motts! What kind of photography technique do you use to get such a dramatic effect? Just wondering.

I like your title, "November Chills", quite apropos! I get the "chills" just looking at those adult cribs...so despondent. : (

Another interesting juxtapostion! A beautiful, ornate gate, against a very sad and lonely place.

I like your poetic description of these tubs at the beginning of your piece; you could write novels! : ) What a great find to have the canvases still attached. The tubs do look mummified-so strange, and yet so sad...

@F.H.-Yes, I agree with you-it is a shame that they don't rehab these old, beautiful, historical buildings. Builders and architects just don't make "castle-like" buildings any more. There's certainly no creativity these days in building large, plain, square-looking structures with no pizazz! Formerly, the old Kirkbride buildings held such a hauntingly, beautiful mystique-why not preserve them? I guess it all comes down to money, these days... rehabing and creating castle-like structures cost too much... but where is the beauty?

Hey Mista' Motts! ; ) Thank you for "fixing" the typo. Not only are you a gifted artist of photography, but also a wiz at computer programming. I know that I make a lot of jokes about being a "Luddite" and lovin' those old, analog ways, but, truly, I do admire your talent for putting this website together so creatively. I especially love the way you made it soooo easy to post comments; and how great it is to see all our former posts by clicking our names. Good job, Mista' Motts!

@Pookie, Former Patient-That's OK about the typo-you never know about computers; sometimes strange things happen! Give me a pencil and paper, the old fashioned way, any day! : )

I'm sorry that so many of you former residents at the Gaebler went through such awful times. It should have been a place of healing, not hurt. I am a Certified Music Therapist (CMT), and have worked with many populations of clients, including psychiatric patients. One of my internships was at McClean Hospital in Belmont, MA-this was a very good facility that truly cared for its residents. I really wished that I could have been a Music Therapist at the Gaebler, because I really wanted to help you all! Please know that, in my heart, I would have liked to provide a caring, therapeutic environment for all of you! May God Bless you! : )
